As a specialist Oracle consulting firm, Herrmann and Lenz Services (H&L) is always looking for ways to deliver new and improved solutions for their customers.


From their headquarters in Burscheid, Germany H&L provides their clients with high availability solutions as well as undertaking complex data migrations, database performance tuning and general database implementation projects.


H&L uses Dbvisit Standby to deliver cost effective high availability database solutions to their customers using Oracle Standard Edition.

The Business Opportunity

One of H&L’s strengths is delivery of cost effective services to customers based on Oracle Standard Edition, including high availability solutions with full performance monitoring.


H&L has developed their own Oracle monitoring solution. This provides a scalable and reliable solution to enable H&L, and their customers, to monitor the performance of their Oracle database environments. H&L wanted to add a high availability solution to this.


Initially they developed a set of custom scripts which were customized for each client’s installation. This caused a significant amount of work for each implementation, and increased project risk. It also created a significant support risk, with documentation quickly becoming out of date, and staff turnover eroding the company’s knowledge about each of the installations.


H&L decided they needed a more robust, repeatable and scalable approach to deliver their high availability service; one which was based on a supported commercial product, and which remained cost effective. They turned to Dbvisit, and Dbvisit Standby, to solve this problem.

The Technical Solution

H&L selected Dbvisit Standby to deliver a robust, complete and repeatable solution.


H&L has made extensive use of Dbvisit Standby in constructing their high availability service. They have combined their own performance monitoring solution with Standby to deliver a cost effective and reliable solution for their clients, based on Oracle Standard Edition.


Using Dbvisit Standby, H&L delivers clients a Recovery Point Objective (total potential for lost data) of 10 – 15 minutes and a Recovery Time Objective (the time to get a replacement system up and running in the event of a total failure) of 30 – 60 minutes.


These service levels are based on a synchronization frequency of ten minutes. H&L has found that this provides the best tradeoff between availability and database performance.


Dbvisit and H&L have collaborated on their respective products so that metrics from Dbvisit Standby can be viewed within the H&L monitoring package. This assists H&L in monitoring and supporting clients’ solutions, and significantly improves the level of service they can offer.


H&L also utilizes Dbvisit Standby as part of the ongoing server maintenance activities they perform for clients.


With Dbvisit Standby’s synchronization running, H&L uses “controlled switchover” to put the standby server into the production role. They are then able to work on the primary server while users continue to have access to the client’s systems. At the conclusion of the maintenance work, they switch the direction of log shipping to replicate all transactions to the primary server before returning it to the production role. This allows H&L to deliver a virtually seamless service, even with one of the pair of servers offline while undergoing maintenance.
