Default Standby Database used for reporting

Question
Can a standby database be brought online for reporting while archived logs being applied throughout the day?

It is not possible to have the standby database in reporting mode (read-only) while applying the archive logs. The standby database is either in read-only mode or in recovery mode. Only in recovery mode can the latest archive logs be applied.

However it is possible to setup up a schedule so that the standby database can be brought up in different modes throughout the day.
This can be automated. Say from 8:00am to 12:00pm the standby database is in read-only mode. From 12:00pm to 2:00pm in recovery mode to bring it up to date with the latest changes, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in read-only mode, and then throughout the night in recovery mode.

When the standby database is in read-only mode, all the latest archive logs are still being sent to the standby server without interruption.

So all the latest archive logs are available and queued up ready to be applied when the standby database is back in recovery mode. This means you are still protected in terms of DR at all times.
