Issue:
The following error message is an example of problems connecting to a standby database. In this instance it occurred during the final stage of a graceful switchover process:

Contacting Standby Database db2 on server02...
200908171437 - Problem with obtaining the last sequence from standby database on server02.
200908171438 - ERROR at line 1:ORA-01507: database not mounted
Dbvisit terminated.
Return code = 433

Solution:
These errors are often related to ORACLE_HOME issues.

In the above example Oracle on Server02 (Virtual server) had been installed in '/home/oracle/9.2.0.7', which was different to Server01 '/product/app/oracle/product/9.2.0'. So in this case soft links had been created so the ORACLE_HOME appeared to be the same - but the /etc/oratab file had NOT been altered.

The key to resolving the problem in this instance, so that the graceful switchover completed successfully, was to modify /etc/oratab so that the ORACLE_HOME is now the "link" to the same location on both servers.

With Dbvisit it is not necessary to use soft links as you can specify a different ORACLE_HOME on both the primary and standby servers. However if the ORACLE_HOME is not the same as what is in the oratab, then you sometimes have issues connecting to the standby database.
