Dbvisit - The ultimate Oracle standby database solution
Dbvisit Uses
Dbvisit - Standby Database Technology can be used for a number of applications:
Standby Database for DR and high availability purposes. Dbvisit automates the synchronisation of the standby database at a remote location for DR and high availability purposes in a single or multi version Oracle environment.
Reporting Database. Dbvisit automates the synchronisation of a reporting database in order to run large reports on the reporting database thus avoiding impacting the primary database. Dbvisit can even open and close the reporting database at specific scheduled times.
Shadow environment, providing risk free problem investigation and resolution. Dbvisit automates the synchronisation of a shadow database for problem investigation and resolution. This shadow database can be used to investigate issues like database bugs or inconsistencies that arise on the primary database and the primary database can continue to run risk free while the issues are investigated on the shadow database.
Capturing snapshots for batch transactions (point in time). Dbvisit can be part of your batch processing by using the standby database for rollback purposes in case of errors. Dbvisit runs as an executable (not an agent or daemon) and can be executed as part of the batch giving precise control of the snapshot moment.
Provide "in-the-box" standby database solution for software packages. Dbvisit can be easily incorporated as part of your software solution to provide "in-the-box" standby database management to your customers. This is because Dbvisit runs as an executable not as an agent.
Forms part of backup strategy to speed up recovery in case of database restores from tape. Dbvisit can manage the Oracle log files and transfer them to a centralised backup server. Checksum calculation is used to ensure that the updates have been transferred correctly. Having a standby database configured is not required for this solution.
Creating and managing test databases. Dbvisit can be used to capture "snapshots" of different database releases or test states.
With Dbvisit you have a complete Oracle enterprise class disaster recovery product to allow business continuity with the following features:
- Automatic graceful switchover (also called role reversal) which may be used for planned outages. The primary database transitions to a standby database and the standby database transitions to a primary database with no data loss. Graceful switchover works for Oracle 8i, 9i, 10g and 11g.
- Oracle RAC support. Dbvisit support Oracle Real Application Cluster.
- Automatic space management. Dbvisit will automatically add new datafiles and tablespaces to the standby database which have been added to the primary database.
- Multiple Standby Databases from the same primary database. For example one standby database can be used for DR and another standby can be used for running large reports without impacting the primary database.
