Dbvisit Replicate Case Study - Fairwinds

Fairwinds Credit Union is a community credit union, based in Orlando Florida, which manages over $2 billion in assets on behalf of over 170,000 members. As a not-for-profit organization, Fairwinds’ objective is to provide financial benefi ts to members through lower loan rates, higher savings rates, and fewer fees than banking institutions.  To support this, and deliver value to their members, they need to ensure all their systems are cost-effective to implement, support and maintain.

Fairwinds turned to Dbvisit Replicate to provide the real-time synchronization they needed for their offl oad reporting database.

The Challenge

Fairwinds’ operates a number of financial systems with high volumes of online transactions combined with large overnight batch jobs that perform scheduled activities and bulk data updates. In parallel, they need accurate and detailed real-time reports based on live data in order to make rapid and critical business decisions.

As their business expanded, Fairwinds’ data volumes grew and their reporting requirements became increasingly complex. Fairwinds found they were struggling to maintain the performance of their online systems at the same time as providing their fi nancial data analysts and money analysts with access to the real-time data they needed.

Fairwinds needed a solution which would ensure the continual and consistent performance of their online systems while making up-to-date data available for live reporting.

The Solution

To maintain online system performance and meet their reporting requirements, Fairwinds decided to implement an offl oad reporting database. This would be a new database set up in parallel to the online system and synchronized in realtime with changes from the production database.

Jay Markel, DBA at Fairwinds says “We don’t like a lot of agents running on our systems, and wanted a solution that was clean, simple and reliable”.

Fairwinds initially tried using Oracle’s Data Pump to perform the synchronization but found it to unsuitable for their needs as it did not provide the real-time replication necessary to provide the timeliness of data required to meet their reporting requirements.

Fairwinds also considered using Oracle’s Active Data Guard and GoldenGate products, but found them to be cost prohibitive.

Fairwinds turned to Dbvisit Replicate to provide the real-time synchronization they needed for their offl oad reporting database.

The Result

Fairwinds’ uses Dbvisit Replicate to perform real-time replication of data from their production online database to a dedicated reporting database. Both are Oracle databases running on Linux, and are housed, operated and maintained by Fairwinds’ internal IT team.

Fairwinds databases contain 1TB of data spread over more than 1,700 tables. Their largest table contains 196 million rows, with several other tables exceeding 60 million rows of data.

Dbvisit Replicate supports synchronization of these databases, even when Fairwinds’ extensive overnight batch jobs are modifying large volumes of data in bulk.

The offload reporting database allows Fairwinds’ financial data analysts and money analysts to continue to use the reporting tools they are familiar with, including Oracle’s SQL Developer and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

Fairwinds undertook their project to implement and test Dbvisit Replicate largely unassisted, relying on the online training and reference material provided for the product by Dbvisit.

Says Jay Markel of Fairwinds, “In addition to their online product documentation, which was fantastic, we received excellent training and guidance from the sales, support and technical teams at Dbvisit.”
