Dbvisit Replicate Case Study - eSolution

eSolution helps clients with the design, implementation and ongoing operation of highly available & scalable solutions. They also monitor and support their clients’ Oracle environments, including Oracle grid infrastructure, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle WebLogic.

To build a data migration process for a client’s online fundraising system, which would successfully migrate 300GB of data to Oracle 11g with a total application outage of less than five minutes, eSolution turned to DBVISIT REPLICATE.

The Challenge

When a key client approached eSolution to move their 300GB database from Oracle Standard Edition 10 to 11g, whilst demanding virtually zero downtime, eSolution knew they needed an innovative and reliable method to migrate the data.

Due to rapid growth in its customer base, and increasing database loads, the client’s application was experiencing performance issues. The client also needed to upgrade their database management system to a supported version, and wished to upgrade the hardware platform at the same time. The decision was made to move the database to an entirely new environment based on Oracle Standard Edition 11g.

The application delivers high profile, celebrity endorsed fund raising campaigns for not-for-profit organizations across the globe, with contributions being made by members of the public around the clock. This meant that the database migration would need to be completed with virtually zero downtime.

Any outage of the system, even just a few minutes, had the potential to impact the funds raised by the active campaigns, and to damage the image of eSolution’s client.

The traditional approach to migrating data involves locking the legacy database in a known state by stopping the application while the data is copied using a method such as export/import. The application is then connected to the migrated database before being restarted.

This approach has a number of limitations, the most significant of which is that the application must remain offline for the full duration of the data copying process, and for large databases it can take a very long time to physically copy the data.

eSolution estimated that it would take six hours to move this particular database using a traditional approach. An outage of this duration was clearly not acceptable, so they needed to find an alternative strategy for the migration.

Dbvisit Replicate Case Study - eSolution

The Solution

eSolution began researching innovative data migration strategies, and in doing so, considered using the database replication techniques they had previously evaluated for a different project.

To assist with this, eSolution approached Dbvisit about using Dbvisit Replicate to deliver the data migration. Most of the other replication tools they assessed as suitable required Oracle Enterprise Edition in order to provide the functionality necessary to complete the migration; Dbvisit Replicate allowed them to work with Standard Edition.

Database replication tools, such as Dbvisit Replicate, enable the incremental copying of databases while leaving the source database available for updating, and the application online, during the migration. They start by copying the data up to a known point, before applying updates made since the migration began. Ongoing updates of the legacy database are applied to the target database in near real-time, keeping the migrated database up-to-date, and leaving the application available to users.

Although they had no prior experience with Dbvisit Replicate, eSolution was able to create an initial migration solution within a week of downloading the software.

So pleased was eSolution with the results of their prototype, and with the support and responsiveness of Dbvisit’s sales and technical teams, that they decided to use Dbvisit Replicate for the migration.

Dbvisit worked closely with eSolution to provide a flexible, robust and cost effective solution for their migration, including the ability to lease Dbvisit Replicate. eSolution’s Technical Director says “Dbvisit provided us with a very cost effective solution for this migration. Aside from being able to use Oracle Standard Edition, Dbvisit also provided us with a very flexible approach to licensing whereby we were able to lease the Dbvisit Replicate software for the duration of the project”.

The Result

Within three weeks, eSolution had used Dbvisit Replicate to develop and test their full migration solution, and were ready for the production migration. The included documentation and test scripts greatly assisted the development of the migration solution. Furthermore, Dbvisit Replicate’s error reporting was able to identify the small number of replication errors caused by the application’s lack of primary keys, enabling eSolution to remedy these as part of the migration, and before they caused an issue.

On the day of the migration Dbvisit Replicate copied the entire 300GB database in less than three hours, with no application downtime. eSolution then left the replication running until the agreed cut over time. In this way ongoing production updates were replicated to the Oracle 11g database as they occurred, maintaining a full, up-to-date copy of the database within the new environment. Up to this point in time there had still been no application downtime.

The cut-over was scheduled for a known quiet time in application usage. At the designated time the production system was shut down, the configuration changed to attach to the new Oracle 11g database, and the system restarted.

The result was a total application downtime of less than five minutes.

eSolution’s client was thrilled with the result. Dbvisit Replicate delivered a smooth successful migration for their Oracle Standard Edition database, with minimal downtime and with zero impact on the operation of their business and the fund raising activities of their customers.
