Case Study - C&W Business
By using Dbvisit Standby’s replication capabilities, the C&W DRaaS service is able to provide customers with a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of one minute and a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of 15 minutes
C&W Business is growing its business with a DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service) product powered by Dbvisit Standby.
C&W Business provides data center, IT infrastructure and business continuity solutions to enterprise and government customers across Latin America and the Caribbean. C&W is focused on creating and delivering the next generation of communications and IT services to its customers.
The Business Offering
As part of their strategy to deliver value added solutions to existing customers, and to attract new customers, C&W reviewed several options for new services. Disaster Recovery (DR) was identified as a key requirement for many organizations, as well as being central to many customers’ compliance with industry regulations. Offering a service- based solution for DR seemed like a logical business proposition, so C&W set about establishing a Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) capability.
C&W’s DRaaS solution design was influenced by both commercial and technical considerations, and Dbvisit Standby supported both aspects.
Firstly, with Oracle holding the majority of the database market within their customer markets, C&W focused on supporting the Oracle platform. Secondly, in order to make the solution competitive and cost effective, C&W required a replication solution which was 100% reliable and supported Oracle Standard Edition.
Having reviewed products available in the market, C&W rigorously tested Dbvisit Standby before choosing to join Dbvisit’s Cloud Service Provider program and use Standby to deliver the data replication functionality of their DRaaS solution.
The Technical Solution
The C&W DRaaS service helps IT departments address the scalability, continuity and management of DR solutions, as well as reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a robust DR solution. The service provides customers with high levels of availability at an affordable price, partly through reduced licensing and support costs.
The C&W DRaaS service delivers a complete, turnkey, replication solution for mission-critical applications using Oracle Standard Edition databases, including those on Oracle RAC architecture.
By using Dbvisit Standby’s replication capabilities, the C&W DRaaS service is able to provide customers with a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of one minute and a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of 15 minutes. One of the systems utilizing C&W’s DRaaS service processes over 3000 transactions per hour. The C&W Customer Service Center (CSC) and Network Operation Center (NOC) combine to ensure operation 24x7, 365 days a year.
In designing and developing their DRaaS offering, C&W built a configurable service integrated with their customer portal. This integration with their existing customer portal was key to C&W; it provides both them and their customers with streamlined and easy-to- use configuration, administration, monitoring and management of the service, from a central location.
Behind the scenes, C&W hosts the service across their five data centers, all connected via fiber optic networks. C&W DRaaS supports Oracle databases from 8i to 12c, including 32-bit and 64-bit installations.
While the service is primarily run on virtualized hardware using Oracle VM for multi-tenancy and scalability, dedicated instances have been configured for some clients with unique requirements.
The Business Result
C&W’s strategy with its modern offerings is to provide customers with services, not just sell them product licenses. Using Dbvisit Standby to deliver a DRaaS service supports this strategy.
Dbvisit’s licensing model and Cloud Service Provider program enables C&W to deliver a value-added service based on a subscription model. As such, C&W has been able to construct a service which scales to suit the customer’s growing requirements, while remaining cost effective.
C&W’s DRaaS product allows them to build stronger and wider relationships with existing customers, as well as attract new customers, helping drive growth for C&W. The DRaaS service has provided significant revenue growth, and has proven to be a successful and profitable addition to the portfolio of services they offer customers.
After three years in the market, C&W has DRaaS customers across many industries, from manufacturing, education, insurance to finance. These customers have a total of 57 databases protected with Dbvisit, including three which are utilizing Oracle RAC in their production environment.
